Arizona - But It's a Dry Heat!

" STEPS "

This past week I have been driving through the Historical District in Downtown Phoenix in search of old building to photograph. What I noticed is that progress continues on it's way as many new buildings are being erected and so the "old" is now mixed with the "new" in apparent agreement.

This week the theme is "steps", I was looking for a series of steps on the ground but instead was attracted to these two buildings, one is old and the other one is new. Look at the difference in architecture.

In the first building the stairs or steps are on the side as a means to escape in case on an emergency, notice the ornaments at the top of the building showing signs of our past.

In the second picture the stairs or steps are right in the front of the building and are meant to be the focal point of it.

I photographed both buildings the same day, I though I was lucky to find both examples, I hope you enjoy the pictures.

This also marks the first time that I will post the big pictures in a "portrait" format, so far I had only posted in "landscape", let me know if you would like to see more in portrait or should keep posting in landscape. I'll appreciate your input on this.

Perfect. That building behind looked very familiar ---then I read you're from Avondale. We used to live in Tucson and spent a lot of time in Phoenix!!

Love your composed theme for 'steps'.

Yep, I did go outside the box this time, didn't I? *smiles*
Even though the steps on the first are practical and somewhat spoil the look of an old building I prefer them to the second ... Go figure

I like the first photo. Seems like you have fun going around taking photos of old buildings. I would too :-) Maybe you could post a collection of it or a photo exhibit :-)

That's alot of steps! Great way to mix the old with the new.
I think that if I had passed those two buildings on the street, I wouldn't even have thought those steps were anything special -- but your amazing photographic eye really captured my attention!!
Great Shot.

Hello 'neighbor'...I love the two different pictures :). You are right, they have cleaned up a lot down town. We will be down-town next Friday for a Diamondbacks game - first time ever we will enter the ballpark :)...

I like both orientations of photos on blogs. One suggestion I would have though - center your pictures, even the portrait ones :)

Have a wonderful weekend (wonder if is is going to rain...).
Those are great examples of steps! I think your pictures look great whether in portrait or landscape, keep it up and Happy Hunting :)

Very awesome use of this week's theme, I like the portrait style better from a blog format point of view but your landscape pictures are also very well done.
That's a lot of steps!!!! :)
Great Pics!

Those are great photos for the theme! I simply meander through my old photos looking for Photo Hunt pictures. I admire those of you who actually go out into the world in search of the theme!

So the first set of steps you're running down quickly to get away from something and the second set you're taking your own sweet time as you leisurely exit the building?!? Both pictures are great and very well done. As for the formats, I like them both equally. Not a lot of help, eh?

Wow that's alot of steps. Happy weekend.

The canopy on the top of the second building seems to draw the eye to the stairs and makes them the focal point. The two do seem to work together though.

those are a lot of steps!!!

Dont forget the blogging scavenger hunt over at Amys Random thoughts. Details and prizes were just announced and the more who participate, the more fun there will be..Hope to see you there!
Two great pictures of steps! Actually, at first glance I thought they both looked very similar - thanks for your descriptions, now I can really see how different they are :)

Great photos! Those buildings both have great steps! It is interesting to look at the similarities, and the differences, between the two buildings.
Ah, home sweet home shots. Very well done. I think the find was perfect not only for the hunt this week but also for making me think about Phoenix. Thanks for that!

Nice photos. I think I'm liking the portrait setting. I have been shooting the same shots with both settings- just to see what works out better. Not always sure if one is better than the other. Still, it's fun to experiment.
Mine's up

Very nice shots! I also like taking photos of older buildings here in NYC. Thanks for stopping by my blog!
The portrait format allows you to get the full height of tall buildings. I noticed in a couple of your landscape shots, little details at the top were cut off. I think you should let the subject dictate the format. Both formats look good on your blog.

Wow great shots! The building looks so perfect!

Oh my ! nothing for me ! I am already tired only from looking at the steps ! Old or new !
I'd hate to have to get down either set in a hurry! Great photos for today.

Nothing like that here.

My photo for the hunt is up.
I like those old buildings best but those external stairs are stunning. As for your photos: whatever you need for the best view of them!
